The Kasol (and Chalal) Diaries

Kasol, the most popular stop in the parvati valley (and the easiest access to the world's best charas) can be a little disappointing. Especially when one has to through one of the narrowest-steepest roads to reach there. Hugely commercialized and very populated on the weekends, owing to its nearness to Punjab. The weather too was a bit disappointing, very similar to that of Delhi.

( It is the small villages near it, like Chalal or Kalsong, which will turn out to be worth the journey.)

Stay in Kasol: We stayed at the very popular Alpine Resort, good rooms and washrooms, just near the river (Rs.650/ 800). Ideal if you are in Kasol for a short trip. The place is quite popular with the families too, thus can be a little weird with small kids running around you all the time while you are trying to smoke up. Food can easily be skipped at this place. (Would stay there again for the good looking wooden rooms and clean spacious washrooms)

We have all heard the folklore that how the valley is being taken over by Israelis and how the most commonly used language is Hebrew. Well it is true to a lot of extent. But beyond this fact the valley has nothing interesting to offer. Oh no, it has, the best charas in the world, the reason Israelis are making Kasol and nearby villages their home. But then it is not one of my weakest points.

Marijuana plant which grows on every nook and corner of the valley, The catch is not the plant but the rub
We went in the season when the fields were being nurtured for the upcoming season's harvest. Burning of the leftover crop. Thus could not see the rubbing process. The ideal time to witness this process would be in the late winters. This is when you should go and become the part of the trade :p

An interesting find was the the Israeli Chruch at the end of the market. Though the people were not very welcoming, on a little insistence we were allowed to see the ceremony/ prayer meeting going on. No photography allowed. Spot this place on the left side at the end of Kasol Market. Its interesting to meet a rabbi in real.

The best place to eat is without a doubt is the Evergreen cafe. It is nicely tucked among the trees and is bang opposite the Church. The candle light dinner in the their garden makes for the perfect ambiance. The mountains around you ( and the pot around you ...).... Its something you will remember for years

Chalal was a 30 minute casual walk from Kasol after crossing the (scary) bridge. (how scared am I always !!)

The village still hasn't lost its old-mountain-village-where-people-are-so-pretty-and-simple charm. Whats interesting is the undercurrent of these villages. All just looks calm. It is in these small villages that the real trade happens (no no , not the THE real trade, that happens much deeper inside. I didnot have the time to find out) Any kid here can roll a better joint than you. Most can rub the charas while just talking to you. Who knows that the sadhu aka the indian-hippie sitting next to you might be a charas lord.

There are enough options to stay in the village. Just walk up to the village and pick the one with your preferred view (aka where you would like to smoke up). We liked the view from Freedom Cafe (every Freedom cafe at every backpacker town is good ... its like they are one big chain). Though the food at this one was not good, the charas definitely was !

What more can be done ? Hmmm ... Trek to other villages near by, Visit Manikaran Sahib (you do not want to be stoned when you go there), Visit the 'festivals' happening nearby (one was Shiva Squad at the time we went) and if more days left ( and more adventurous than me), check the timing for the Kheer ganga trek.

    1. Hi Alok

It will be really REALLY cold there at the time. But the good part is that there will be very less crowd. Alpine is open year round. I hear Chalal and Tosh are also accessible at the time. Though the Kheer Ganga trek is closed till Feb.... It should be a fun experience, just carry a hundred jackets with you !

    2. Grashima,

Is is ohkay to spend 29,30,31 in and around kasol and leave for Delhi on 1st. I will be at bhuntar on 29th morning. where can I get a bus back to delhi. Im gonna book a Volvo for 1st just wanted to ask wheather there are any buses / local transport to Manali.

      Much Thanks
      Kunal

      Delete
    3. Hi Kunal... That is a good idea given you are ready to face the very very cold weather.
So from Bhuntar to Kasol you can take a local bus. From Kasol to Manali, you can again take local buses (via Bhuntar only). The Journey back to Delhi, you will have to PRE book a bus from any local travel agents. The buses generally start from Manali, stop at Bhutar (where the Kasol passengers board) and head back.
      Happy Travels !!!

  10. Hey. That was one nice review. I'm planning to go to Kasol for 2 days in January first week. Cold weather won't be a problem as we want to enjoy the snow. Will the hash be easily available and will the town be a ghost town at that time? Hoping it won't be.

    1. Hi Varun
The place will not be very crowded if you choose to go on a weekday, which should be good ! & it never is a ghost town out there. Further to chalal and tosh might be.

  11. Hey Grashima great post and now its tempting me badly to go kasol. :)
Well I have few queries in my mind please answer them.
    1) Is kasol safe for female traveling alone?
    2) I m from Delhi so can you suggest me at what time should I board bus so that I can reach in morning?
    3) Do suggest some cheap and safe hotels in kasol?
    4) I m planning to go in first week of september? Is this time favorable to v visit it?
    5) Are 3 days enough for the trip?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey Palak .. Glad I could tempt you :)
      1) Kasol is relatively safe for female travelers. But on the weekend a lot of crowd from Delhi and Chandigarh will be encountered and you might get some unwanted attention, but it is not so common
      2) You will have to board an overnight bus from Delhi. If you are travelling alone, you can board a government bus to Manali and get down at Bhuntar. Kasol is around 50 kms from here. You will get local buses from Bhuntar to Kasol.
      3) You can randomly walk into the market and pick a guest house of your choice after negotiating. We stayed at Alpine resorts where rooms start at 800. This place gets quickly booked on the weekend. I also heard of a new place called Cirrus, not sure how much it costs but looks promising. You can also check this place called Antrabhava if you are looking for something very offtrack https://www.facebook.com/MAPsyT?ref=stream.
      4) September is a good time/ on season
      5) Three days should be good without travel time
I hope I could help you in some way :) Please get in ouch if you need any more info.

  12. Hey Grahima ... i just wanna know that which is the best place in kasol. Generally the crowd belongs to indian community or Foriegners.. Is it safe for tracking or doing some adventures activity there. would u recommend this on mid of dec.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Drake. Kasol is a very small village in itself. There are number of villages and treks in the nearby area. You could keep Kasol as your base if you like lively places, and if you want to be just around nature you can stay in Chalal, travel forward to Tosh or nearby villages. Dec will be good though it will be freezing there !

      Delete
  13. I quite liked Kasol despite the fact that I happened to be there in the peak season. The crowds can get a little annoying, but trekking to Chalaal and around is a great way of keeping away from swarms of people, while taking in all the beauty. Another highlight of Kasol was the delicious food, and hogging became sort of a habit there.

We also visited Tosh and other such villages, the only downer was the awful road!

PS: Even we stayed at Alpine!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Anya . I am glad you liked it ! I guess I need to revisit in peak season to enjoy the crowd too ! I too loved the variety of food. And I agree, the best way to take in Kasol & nearby is to just walk/ trek to places and villages around. The more inside you go the more prettier it becomes.

-If October 6.7.8 would be good time visit. As in, will it be very crowded and how will the weather be
-And, even if it is peak season, do you think one can get good rooms at around 800rs for four people

    thanks

    1. Hi Darshan

Thanks ! The dates look good. The weather should be good too. Rooms are around 800 in peak season too at Alpine, but you must pre book. Try this number for Alpine 9816271067. Rest you can find cheaper places too. Please try links in the reply to Palak on this post only. Great Travels !

    1. hello Siddharth,

kasol in last week of dec must be a super chilling weather. if you are coming from a not very cold state, it may turn out to be a downer for the 31st eve. yes the nature is untamed and must keep you amazed. crowd will be less unless a weekend, which again depends on the weather and road conditions.

if you are planning for a kheerganga trek, it is not quite well suggested unless you are an expert mountaineer and have a guide along with an expert knowledge of the route.

you can contact Premchand on below link you will get his number.

  28. Kasol is a small village on the lap of nature in Himachal Pradesh. places to visit in Kasol are hypnotic and can hold a tourist’s attention for long.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am a Kasol fan myself. With greying hair on my top storey, I would contribute a bit to help young and budget travellers headed to Kasol (with your kind permission, of course).
    1. Kasol town is getting too crowded and is headed for the same sad destiny as that of Manali and Simla. There are issues with parking, with garbage disposal and such like matters. Even though the town retains its charm because of its natural beauty and a vibrant crowd, you may not really like to stay inside the town for long. Room rents have also gone up because of an ever tilting demand-supply ratios over past two years. A better option, therefore, would be to stay 'around' Kasol and walk around the area, including Kasol town, instead of plonking yourself inside the town.

    2. When we look at the options 'around' Kasol, there are some distinct segments.

    (a) Ahead of Kasol (towards Manikaran)..... there is virtually nothing once you leave the town and travel for half a Km or so towards Manikaran.

    (b) Short of Kasol, along the road and this side of the river, most of the accommodations, like Himalayan Village (high end) and Parvati Kuteer are expensive for budget travellers. Parvati Woods Cottage has a variety of rooms from 500 per head to 5000 (double to quad occupancy per night). They also have bonfires and offer basic home cooked food . Contact person is Prakul (9805275343 ).
    (c) The actual fun, however, lies across the river. There is no motorable road that runs over Parvati River in and around Kasol and that is why the area on the other side is peaceful and serene. The area across can be divided into two parts - first is area of Village Chalal (bang opposite Kasol). Himalayan Camp is run by Om Negi (9805716616 ) there. The tented camp offers basic food and basic accommodation but the location is too good. Charges range from 300 to 500 per head per day for accommodation but he allows as many people in one tent as possible. There are other properties like Chalal Cafe, Shiva Cafe, Shanti Cafe, Greenpark Cafe, Maya Cafe and Guru Cafe. All these are cafe patronised by Israelis and accommodation is very basic. Stress is on 'Shiva's Regal' rather than Chivas Regal and associated brands. Many of these places also involve long walks though area is beautiful to walk through.
The second chunk of area, and the one that we would rate higher than Chalal, is to the West, ie, across the river but short of Kasol. It is roughly opposite Parvati Kuteer. The area is called Katagla. The access is through a footbridge over the river. The drop off point is Temple at Jai Nallah (all bus guys know it). From there, you get down to the river, cross it to reach Katagla area (though actual Katagla Village is slightly ahead). Musik Cafe is to your left as you step on terra firma across the bridge while there are few good places to the right of the bridge..... White Cafe is the biggest of all in the area but has a concrete building, is patronised by Israelis and their attempts to create a pool inside the property has run into a legal hassle. Ahead of it is a hidden treasure called Katagla Forest Retreat - a traditionally constructed property of wood and slates with its own restaurant (interestingly named Mari Vanna). It is 'hidden' from the view and the entry into the compound itself feels like a little adventure. The entrance is through thick cover of trees and then the compound opens up. The property is run by Anshul (9899171787/9805767073). A total of ten rooms (including three that you need to sneak into!) and a restaurant and a lawn that has apple trees in it and unbeatable feel - that is how the package is. Ideal for groups and even solo travellers, the property can host about 40 of a group or 35 otherwise. They charge nothing for the third person if the room is shared for 1000/- a night. The bigger rooms can accommodate four or five for 1500/-. They have flying fox (trolley) across the river to help you with luggage.
